The Granite Mountains stand 50 miles south of Baker, California, above Kelso Dunes, along Kelbaker Road.  Elevations range from 3700'-6796' making Summer hiking and Winter weather events very rewarding.  Exploring the surreal jumble of granite will reveal robust plants and animals. The UC Desert Research Center restricts portions of this area to explorers which makes me very jealous.
